Netflix fans devastated after show is brutally axed

Netflix fans were left devastated after one particular show was axed this week.

A popular show ended after only three seasons and sadly will not return for a fourth season, according to a report by Variety on Tuesday.

The first two seasons of the musical comedy originally premiered and streamed on Peacock.

And when Peacock chose not to move forward last year, Netflix decided to save the show and renew the series for a third season on their platform.

The last season of Girls5Eva aired at the beginning of the year in March.

The comedy series was created by Meredith Scardino and produced by Tina Fey — who joined the stunning, star-studded cast at the New York City premiere this past spring.

Girls5Eva followed the story of a ’90 girl group who reunite and attempt to revive their careers after an unexpected second chance at doing so.

The series starred Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell and Renée Elise Goldsberry as well as Ashley Park as the members of the girl group.

After the announcement from Netflix, Philipps, 45, took to Instagram to share her thoughts.

‘Well. 2024 sure has been a f***ing heartbreak,’ she began in a lengthy caption alongside a screenshot of the news. ‘Some more painful than others, tbh.’

The actress then gushed about working on the show with her fellow cast and crew members.

‘I am forever grateful for this incredible show and these girls that became my sisters5eva, for Netflix giving us a chance to sing together a little bit longer and for everyone at Universal and Peacock who rooted so hard for our show,’ she wrote.

‘And of course the genius of Meredith [Scardino, creator and showrunner,] and Jeff [Richmond, executive producer and composer,] and Eric [Gurian, executive producer] and my patron saint Tina Fey,’ she added.

‘I honestly don’t know how or what I would be without this show and the endless joy it brought me in the darkest time of my life,’ Philipps wrote in her heartfelt message.

‘I really really love what I do. And sometimes it feels almost impossible,’ she said as she concluded her post.

‘Anyway, isn’t that just like everything good in life? Love you 5eva,’ she wrote alongside a red heart emoji.

Philipps first revealed the news on her podcast, Doing Her Best, earlier this month.

‘It’s dead,’ she told her podcast listeners in an episode that aired on December 4.

‘Yeah, I’m just saying it because f*** it,’ she said. ‘If Netflix won’t, I will.’

She continued: ‘I guess not enough people watched it or watched it in the way that counts, or I don’t know.

‘I actually just don’t know,’ she told her podcast guest Danny Pellegrino.

Philipps explained that Netflix had not said ‘anything about how the deal was structured when it went to Peacock for the second season’ and have not yet said if the show would be done for good.

‘So there’s time. I don’t think it’ll ever be dead-dead,’ she said. ‘The characters are too good.’

Philipps continued: ‘I’ve even joked with the cast, like, we should do Radio City or turn it into a live stage show — a musical. Maybe even Broadway someday.’

She also commented on the name of the show, hinting that it could have been part of the reason for the show’s lack of popularity.

‘I think the name Girls5Eva is amazing and totally right, but I think it’s possible it alienates men — like straight f***ing dudes.’

Then, she posed the question: ‘Has anyone ever done a study on how women-forward titles affect the success of shows?’

Following the devastating news that the show was actually axed, fans of the comedy series took to social media to share their reactions.

Another user tweeted in gushing praise of the series and said the cancellation is a ‘huge loss.’

‘Girls5eva was about hope & joy & taking risks & surrounding yourself with people you love & the power of friendship & women being able to do whatever the f*** they want whenever the f*** they want,’ the tweet read. ‘It was about so many important things & it being cancelled is a huge loss.

Another pointed out the unjust lack of popularity.

‘This is why it would have been great if Girls5eva could have gotten some well-deserved Emmy / Golden Globe love this year, that could have helped with viewership,’ the fan wrote. ‘But nobody was pushing it at all. Not Netflix, not pundits, nobody.
