COMPTON, Calif. — A father has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his 9-year-old son in Compton over the weekend.
The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Haskins Avenue, near Visalia Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
In the backyard of the residence, deputies discovered the young boy, identified by his mother as Princeton Nicholas Jones, with a gunshot wound. Tragically, he was declared deceased at the location.
Detectives honed in on the boy’s biological father as the suspect. Nicholas Jones, 32, was arrested for murder and child abuse resulting in death.
The boy’s mother, Creole Green, said her son had autism.
Expressing her deep sorrow, Green shared, “My intention was to provide him with the necessary guidance and resources for him to eventually navigate the world on his own.” She added, “I am heartbroken that my son’s life was cut short at the tender age of nine.”
The boy’s mother added that he was staying at his grandfather’s house when the shooting happened.
Family members described Princeton as funny, caring and said he adored his mother.
A GoFundMe account has been set up.
A vigil was held Sunday to honor the boy. Community leaders called for an end to the violence.
Addressing the issue, Paulette Gibson, the president of the Compton NAACP, stated, “This is the community we belong to. It is truly unfortunate that our youth cannot feel secure within their own neighborhood.”
Additional details about the deadly shooting were not available.
