Bryan Kohberger’s defense team is attempting to shape a particular perception for future jurors by seeking to have certain evidence excluded, as per a statement from a former FBI special agent.
Kohberger stands accused of first-degree murder in connection with the tragic deaths of four students at the University of Idaho – Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; and Ethan Chapin, 20. Additionally, the former Washington State University student faces a charge of burglary.
At a hearing on April 9, Judge Steven Hippler made rulings on various motions brought by the defense. Among the decisions, Hippler partly granted a defense motion aimed at preventing the prosecution from using terms like “psychopath” and “sociopath” during the trial.
He cautioned, however, that the defense’s request is similar to asking for “an order that says the state shall not commit prosecutorial misconduct.” Hippler said the word “murderer” could be used during closing arguments, but said terms like “sociopath” and “psycho-” can’t be used unless an expert evaluation determines that these words describe Kohberger.
A jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 11.
