Frozen Funding: Northwestern University’s $790 million funding halted by officials from Donald Trump’s administration.

In EVANSTON, Illinois (WLS), Northwestern University is now part of a growing number of colleges nationwide experiencing a reduction in federal financial support from the Trump administration due to investigations into alleged civil rights breaches.

The White House has confirmed a freeze on approximately $790 million in federal funds earmarked for Northwestern University. However, specific details about which grants are affected or additional information regarding this fund halt have not been disclosed.

Northwestern has faced questions over its handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations last year and how it policed antisemitism on campus.

Last week, the university released what it called a progress report on what it’s done to protect Jewish students.

Northwestern University has stated that it has not received official notification from the federal government about this matter. The university emphasizes that the funding it obtains is crucial for conducting innovative and life-saving research, such as the creation of the world’s smallest pacemaker and advancements in combating Alzheimer’s disease.

The university said, in part, “This type of research is now at jeopardy. The University has fully cooperated with investigations by both the Department of Education and Congress.”

The White House also confirms it’s frozen about a billion dollars in federal funds for Cornell University in New York.

Earlier this year, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania also had their federal funding cut.
