Created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller, Severance follows the lives of Lumon Industry’s “severed” workers, who had chips implanted in their brains to split their memories between their work and personal lives. Since the critically-acclaimed workplace thriller aired its suspenseful Season 1 finale in April 2022, fans around the world have been clamoring for new episodes. And on Saturday, December 7, they got one step closer when Apple TV+ debuted Severance‘s Season 2 trailer from the Thunder Stage at CCXP24 in São Paulo, Brazil.

The nearly three-minute look into the 10-episode season — which premieres January 17 on Apple TV+ — offers compelling insights into the aftermath of Season 1’s conclusion, when Dylan (Zach Cherry) trigged the Overtime Contingency and allowed Mark (Adam Scott), Helly (Britt Lower), and Irving’s (John Turturro) Innies to inhabit the bodies of their Outies. Was the risky attempt to blow the whistle on their hellish workplace a success? Per Apple TV+, “In Season 2, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.” Yikes!

Severance‘s Season 2 trailer (located at the top of this article) kicks off with a voiceover from a new series regular, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, who plays Mr. Drummond, a mysterious figure associated with Lumon. “Their work will be remembered as one of the greatest moments of this planet,” Drummond says as subsequent clips show the MDR team scaling a snowy cliff outdoors, a glimpse of Burt’s Outie (Christopher Walken), and Mark running through what appears to be the Lumon parking lot.

We then get a look at Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) visiting Mark AT HIS HOME in an effort to convince him to return to Lumon. “The Mark I’ve come to know is happy,” Milchick claims, as the trailer shows clips of Mark’s Innie sprinting down the white halls and frantically commandeering the speaker from Cobel’s old office to try and reach The Board.

Wondering where the rest of MDR’s team members are? They’re back on the severed floor as well! But things look a bit different this time around. (Did you peep that new Kier Eagan painting?!)

“What you all did was one of the most painful moments in the history of this company,” Milchick explains before telling Mark that his team achieved fame in the outside world and became “the face of Severance reform.” He even hands over a copy of The Kier Chronicle newspaper as proof, with a front page article titled “‘INNIES’ BLOW THE WHISTLE.” A good amount of text is redacted, though, so Mark still has reason to be suspicious…

When the Innies reunite in the office, they swiftly debrief on their Overtime Contingency experiences, with Irving sharing, “It’s not our world up there” and Mark revealing that his Outie’s wife died a few years ago and — oh yeah! — she’s Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Now that Mark is back inside Lumon with that knowledge, he’s set on saving Ms. Casey, so the search is on. While his Outie might not be ready to admit hat Gemma could still be out there, the trailer shows that Devon (Jen Tullock) thankfully isn’t ready to move on from the “SHE’S ALIVE” of it all just yet.

The exciting look at Season 2 also shows Outie Mark confronting Ms.Cobel/Selvig (Patricia Arquette) outside of Lumon and asking if she knows anything about Gemma. As flashes of Gemma and Ms. Casey fly by, however, Cobel says, “Mark, there will be no honeymoon ending for you.” *Jennifer Lawrence Hot Ones voice* What do you mean? WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!

Before the trailer concludes, we get a peek at Outie Irv in a phone booth, Outie Burt sitting in front of a fire, a mysterious “WHO IS ALIVE?” lamp, Helly and Mark exploring a room of goats, and Outie Helly and Cobel meeting at Lumon following the disastrous gala. “You don’t value them, you fear them,” Cobel tells Helena. “We fear no one,” the Eagan daughter replies. Chilling!

As Helena reviews footage of the severed floor, she at the sight of her Innie kissing Mark ahead of the Overtime Contingency. (OK!?) We hear Milchick promise someone that he’s “tightening the leash.” And we see Mark and Helly try to rally more Innies to join their search, asking, “If we let this happen to Ms. Casey, who’s gonna step up when it happens to us?

A montage of accelerated clips teases steamy kissing, a possible retirement watermelon sculpture of Irving’s head, mysterious medical tools, and Gwendoline Christie’s character ringing a bell. We also see the return of Regabhi (Karen Aldridge), our dearly beloved Ricken (Michael Chernus), Helly underwater, and flashes of more perplexing chaos.

After Milchick says,”Goodbye, Mark S” and Mark screams, “WAIT” from the elevator, the trailer ends on a more lighthearted note by introducing new deputy manager, Ms. Huang (series regular Sarah Bock).

As she takes over for Milchick and aims to play the ball game from Season 1 with Mark and his new team (Stefano Carannante, Bob Balaban, and Alia Shawkat), Mark W. (Balaban) raises his hand to ask, “Why are you a child?”

In the driest, most logical way possible, Ms Huang replies, “Because of when I was born.” With that last laugh, the Severance Season 2 trailer comes to an end and fans everywhere are left to theorize until January 7. We have so many burning questions in need of answering, but if this intense trailer is a solid indication of what’s to come, it looks like Severance Season 2 will be worth the wait.

Severance Season 2 premieres Apple TV+ Friday, January 17, 2025.
