In a recent briefing, Gov. JB Pritzker participated in discussions with other U.S. governors led by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, addressing the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The situation intensified when Iran launched missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar following a series of strikes exchanged between Israel and Iran in the aftermath of Operation Midnight Hammer.

Prior to President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran the same day, both Homeland Security and the FBI cautioned state and local authorities about the heightened threat level posed by these attacks.
The Chicago Police Department said it is closely monitoring the events in the Middle East.
University of Chicago Political Science Professor Robert A. Pape joined ABC7 to discuss what might happens next after Iran hit back at the U.S.
“While there is no actionable intelligence in Chicago at this time, we are closely communicating with our federal and state partners to receive updates to ensure sufficient resources are in place throughout the city,” CPD said.
Illinois State Police released a statement, saying, “The ISP Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center (STIC) works with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety partners to monitor for and identify potential threats. At this time, no credible threats have been identified and we remain vigilant. The public is essential in our collective safety and security. We ask the public to report any suspicious activity to local authorities, who are in direct communication with STIC.”
And Northwestern University released a statement, saying, “Northwestern University leadership in Evanston has been in consistent contact with our counterparts in Doha. The University has measures in place to ensure all faculty, staff and students on our Doha campus are well-informed and safe. The safety and security of our community is and remains our top priority.”
Pritzker said on X that he’s keeping a close eye and is in consultation with federal authorities. But there are no known local threats at this time.
Meanwhile, there are major questions about how much of Iran’s nuclear program was destroyed in Saturday’s attack.
Trump says the facilities were “obliterated.”
Congressman Darin LaHood, R-Illinois, released a statement, saying, “Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism and allowing them to develop a nuclear weapon would have devastating consequences for the United States, our partners in the Middle East, and allies around the world. President Trump used his constitutional authority to protect the United States and direct our brave service members to conduct an exceptionally precise and successful mission against three of Iran’s nuclear sites. While the safety and lives of American troops are always our number one priority, Iran’s telegraphed response, targeting two U.S. military bases in the region, shows how weak the authoritarian regime has truly become. In my role on the House Intelligence Committee, I will continue to monitor events in the region as we move forward.”
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says it’s too early to tell the full scope.
“Final battle damage will take some time, but initial battle damage assessment indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” Gen. Dan Caine said.
Satellite imagery shows the damage to the three nuclear facilities targeted in the attack.
The Trump administration has said the Fordow facility, built underground, was a key target.
That’s where the 30,000-pound “bunker buster bombs” were dropped.
From the sky, the only damage that can be seen are the holes the bombs created, when they dug into the ground before exploding.
“We really can’t know what went on underneath the ground in Fordow. The president called it a monumental success, but it all happened 200 feet down, and we can’t see with satellites,” Col. Steve Ganyard said.
Israel and Iran traded missile attacks Monday before Trump announced the ceasefire agreement.
In one video circulating online, a large blast can be seen at the site of an electrical substation in Israel.
Foreign policy experts are calling Iran’s retaliation a symbolic tit-for-tat.
“A lot of these attacks right now are in many ways symbolic, kind of allowing both sides to be able to say they’ve taken action, but without having to actually suffer, if you will, the consequences of these actions,” said University of Chicago Political Science Associate Professor Paul Past.
But North Shore Congressman Brad Schneider says the attack should not be perceived lightly.
Congressman Mike Quigley is concerned that continued retaliation from Iran may come in the form of terrorism.
“I’m not going to be dismissive of this by any means. Iran has threatened the United States since the regime took over in 1979 chanting Death to America, Death to Israel,” said Schneider, D-Illinois.
Schneider is a strong supporter of Israel. He travelled to the Middle East last week. While he prefers diplomacy, he is supportive of anything that rids or moves Iran’s nuclear program back.
“The consistent message was that a nuclear armed Iran is a threat to every country in the Gulf region and in the broader Middle East, but they all want the de-escalation,” Schneider said.
Earlier Monday, before the ceasefire agreement was announced, Chicago Congressman Mike Quigley said he was concerned that continued retaliation may come in the form of terrorism.
“Iran is probably the greatest state sponsor of terror in the world, and they have extraordinary capabilities. So obviously, we’re concerned about the homeland and service members,” said Quigley, D-Illinois.
Quigley, Schneider and Trump hope diplomacy ends the situation with the United States quickly, but the president has been down this road before, unsuccessfully.
“It’s important to remember that when he pulled out of the original Iran deal that was brokered by President Barack Obama, he claimed he was going to come up with a new deal right away. He failed to do that, but I still think that’s something that he’s interested in trying to achieve,” Past said.
The ceasefire announcement came after Trump floated the idea of a regime change in Iran.
Trump posted online, “If the current Iranian regime is unable to make Iran great again, why wouldn’t there be a regime change?”
The vice president has said that’s not their goal.
“Well first of all, we don’t want to achieve regime change; we want to achieve the end of the Iranian nuclear program,” Vice President JD Vance said.
“If they refuse to engage in diplomacy moving forward, why shouldn’t the Iranian people rise up against this brutal terrorist regime? That’s a question the president raised last night,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday morning.
Locally, organizations who oppose U.S. involvement organized an anti-war protest at 5 p.m. Monday at Federal Plaza.
Dr. Louis Kraus, who leads Rush’s child and adolescent psychiatry efforts, said it’s normal to feel anxious or fearful amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

He gave some tips Monday on how to process these “out of our control” events.
Kraus said it’s important not to show anxiety to children, wait for them to bring up concerns and offer them assurance everything will be OK.
