Forever has taken the world by storm.
Joel Keller, a contributor to DECIDER, recommended that everyone should STREAM IT in DECIDER’s review of Forever. He mentions that the series takes its time to narrate a story about first love, capturing the highs and lows that teenagers face while navigating love and intimacy in the age of social media. The show’s appeal is elevated by the strong chemistry between its lead actors.
However, the positive feedback doesn’t stop there. With an impressive 95% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Forever has been praised as “a triumph” by RobertEbert.com, recognized as Akil’s “finest work” by Variety, and lauded as “one of TV’s all-time best romances” by Time.
Based on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel, Mara Brock Akil’s adaptation revolves around Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) and Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.), who reconnect at a New Year’s party during high school after years of separation. The two teenagers set off on their own romantic journey, exploring the complexities of first love, complete with all the awkward moments that come with being a teenager.
“I think we’ve all been awko-tacos in love in the beginning of things, whether it be because we’re young or because this is a new person,” Simone shared in a chat with DECIDER. “I feel like we’ve experienced a little bit of discomfort, so it’s really just a matter of pulling that out and just being real dramatic with it.”
Cooper Jr. credited Brock Akil’s writing for nailing this relatable awkwardness, telling us, “But when I was in high school, I know I wasn’t cool and I wasn’t suave. And we see so many teenagers who are 30 years old and they are portraying these teenagers that feel grown, in a sense. And I think, you, know, Forever does a great job at presenting the youth.”
In addition to Simone and Cooper Jr., the Forever cast also features Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Xosha Roquemore, Barry Shabaka Henley, Niles Fitch, Marvin L. Winans III, Adriyan Rae, and Ali Gallo.
All eight episodes of Season 1 are streaming on Netflix, but fans are left wondering whether Forever could return for a second season. Here is everything we know about the possibility of Forever Season 2.
As of now, a second season of Forever has yet to be confirmed by the streamer. However, Akil told Entertainment Weekly that “there’s absolutely room” for a Season 2.
“In this art form, I don’t make it for myself,” she continued. “I’m making it for an audience. I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it.”
During an interview with DECIDER, Simone said she “would be super down to do a Season 2.”
“I love all my characters, but Keisha I hold very near and dear to my heart because that was the first time I was a lead,” she added. “So it was the first time I ever sat with a character long enough to really just be in her world and exist in it almost every day.”
Cooper Jr. also told Us Weekly, “I think that depending on how it’s received, we may be able to come back for Season 2. “I think Mara [Brock Akil] is in the works of writing some things for Season 2.”
