Issa Rae Says ‘Insecure’ Fans Have Been Asking Her To ‘Reshoot’ Series Finale: “People Are Really Mad”

Despite the conclusion of Issa Rae’s groundbreaking HBO dramedy Insecure in late 2021, some fans are still struggling to come to terms with how the story ended, with some even calling for reshoots.

In a recent interview with People, the Barbie star acknowledged the lingering frustration among certain viewers.

Addressing the backlash, Rae acknowledged that “People are really mad about” the way the series finale played out. Over a span of five seasons between 2016 to 2021, Rae’s character, the socially awkward Issa Dee, ultimately decides to rekindle her romance with her long-term love interest Lawrence (Jay Ellis).

However, this choice has divided fans, particularly those who had already moved on from Lawrence, especially after he had a child with another woman, Condola (Christina Elmore). Ellis’ portrayal of the polarizing character had even led to real-life altercations, with the actor sharing in 2020 that he had been physically assaulted and verbally abused due to his on-screen character.

“People have told me to reshoot, which is crazy because they didn’t like the decision that Issa makes in the end,” Rae explained.

Despite ongoing requests for more episodes, the Rap Sh!t executive producer has no plans to revisit Insecure. “I get asked for season 6 a lot — even this morning [Thursday, Jan. 30],” she shared.

Rae also revealed she had just been hacked: “I had to just post because I got hacked this morning. Unfortunately, I fell for whatever phishing scams and now can’t get into my account. And I don’t even use it. So if you see crazy tweets from me, just know it’s not me [and I said], ‘Somebody, please help’ on my Insta Story. ‘I got hacked on Twitter.’ And somebody was like, ‘I’ll help you if you give me three more seasons of Insecure.’ So I’m like, y’all can’t even take me seriously.”

Rae had long been aware of the pressure surrounding Insecure’s finale. Ahead of the show’s final season, she discussed the weight of fan expectations during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert: “All the pressure — this was terrifying. Because you’re ending a show and people are gonna have their opinions,” she said. “You don’t want to drop it, and we’re on HBO, which, you know, had another popular finale that people felt strongly about, and people come up to me like, ‘Girl, I can’t wait for the final season, just don’t Game of Thrones it.’”
