Fans of mother and father Jason Ritter and Melanie Lynskey, listen up. A crossover is coming.
After a failed attempt to cast Ritter in Yellowjackets – he was supposed to appear in Season 2 but his role got cut – fans have been eager to see the real-life couple collaborate once more. It seems like that wish might come true soon.
During an interview at PaleyFest LA with Decider, Ritter revealed that he is in the process of convincing his former Matlock colleagues to include Lynskey in the show. The exact timing of this collaboration is uncertain for now, but Ritter is optimistic about the possibility.
Regarding when Lynskey will make an appearance on the show, Ritter remarked, “Anytime,” showing his eagerness for the event. He mentioned that he has already put the idea forward and both he and Lynskey are excited about it. The team behind Matlock also supports this idea. It seems like it’s just a matter of all the pieces falling into place.
Ritter added, “I think we can call it inevitable.”
The pair first met on the set of 2013’s The Big Ask and began dating shortly after. Since then, they have starred in two more films together, tied the knot, welcomed a daughter, and landed their own successful TV shows, both of which stream on Paramount+. Additionally, both actors are slated to appear in Season 2 of Rian Johnson and Peacock‘s Poker Face.
On Saturday, Decider spoke with Lynskey at the PaleyFest panel for Poker Face and asked her for her thoughts on a Matlock guest role. She agreed with her husband and added that she is just waiting for them to pitch a script to her and for schedules to work out. The New Zealand-born actress also said her only stipulation is that she needs to have a scene with Kathy Bates.
In Matlock, Ritter plays Julian Markston, a senior partner at the law firm where Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Bates) gets a job to find out who is responsible for her daughter’s death. Lynskey explained that she has always viewed Bates as the gold standard for acting and is No. 1 on her co-star bucket list. So if they can get them together, she is in. And what about her hubby?
“Sure, him too,” she joked, adding that he’s not her top priority since they live together, see each other daily, and have worked together before.
Matlock producers, it’s time to use Bates as bait!
Catch up on the first season of Matlock on Paramount+ now. New episodes air Thursdays on CBS and stream the next day online.
