Joy Behar has surprised many by aligning herself with the MAGA fanbase in criticism of a specific Saturday Night Live sketch that depicted President Donald Trump’s supporters as racists.
During a recent episode of The View, the hosts delved into the “Black Jeopardy” sketch aired during SNL’s 50th-anniversary special. The sketch featured actor Tom Hanks playing a MAGA supporter who hesitated to shake hands with host Kenan Thompson, sparking disapproval from Trump supporters, including former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson who labeled the sketch as “foolish.”
While Behar is usually quick to blast Trump and his followers, she actually agreed with them this time.
“The fact remains that they’re making anyone who voted for Trump look like a racist,” she said. “And that’s why they’re mad.”
Behar reiterated her stance, stating, “I personally would not participate in that because I don’t believe any group can be pigeonholed. Many of these individuals, from my perspective, have been misinformed. They expected lower grocery prices, which haven’t happened. They anticipated a decrease in inflation, but it has gone up. They believed Medicaid and social security were secure, yet they are not.”
The comedian added that it was “not only racism that caused Trump to be in office” for a second term.
“We have to remember that. So, of course they’re going to be insulted,” she said. “We were insulted by Bill O’Reilly when he had a broad stroke on Muslims in the same way. It’s the same thing. If they can do it to them, they can do it to us.”
Sunny Hostin, on the other hand, reminded Behar and other viewers that Hanks’ character was first introduced during a 2016 sketch, which became the “most popular installment of ‘Black Jeopardy.’”
“I think it’s a very subversive sketch, in fact,” Hostin said. “It’s about Black culture being American culture. So when you have the regular Jeopardy, it’s basically the white Jeopardy. That already exists because I’ve been on it and lost.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
