The search for missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, who was last seen on March 6 on a beach outside the five-star RIU Republica Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has intensified.
Authorities are following leads based on surveillance video that captured Konanki’s last movements before her disappearance. The footage, acquired by Noticias SIN, shows the group walking towards the beach near the luxurious retreat around 4:15 am.
A male friend who was with Konanki around the time she went missing is currently the subject of an investigation. Police have revealed that he was in the water at the same beach, and they are interrogating him to verify his account of the events as per a translation of a statement in Spanish.
Authorities have not named any suspects amid their ongoing investigation. In a release on Tuesday, the Dominican National Police said it is “re-interviewing targeted individuals who were in the victim’s proximity at the time of her disappearance.”
The University of Pittsburgh Police Department also provided an update Monday, saying it is also working with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office in the search efforts for Konanki.Â
The hotel said its team is “providing full support to the authorities in the search, and an emergency protocol has been activated to ensure that all necessary measures are taken.”
A joint investigation into Konanki’s disappearance is being conducted by the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican National Police and the Dominican Prosecutors Office. The FBI is also assisting.
