LOS ANGELES — “Mufasa: The Lion King” takes us on a journey through young Mufasa’s rise to kingship, accompanied by a legendary soundtrack.
In a recent featurette behind the scenes, director Barry Jenkins and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda engaged in a discussion about the timeless themes present in the original “Lion King” and the process behind creating the soundtrack for the new adaptation.
An essential element that makes “The Lion King” stand out is the iconic opening performance by Lebo M., a sentiment that both Miranda and Jenkins acknowledged in their conversation, noting that his voice sets the tone for the upcoming release.
Miranda opened up about his songwriting process, saying, “Most of the inspiration for the lyrics is there in that script.”
He added, “‘I always wanted a brother’—that was the line that made me lean in.”
Jenkins also revealed his personal favorite track from the film, “Milele,” which Miranda found to be the most challenging to compose. Miranda described “Milele” as a piece that builds up and rises dramatically, highlighting Disney’s exceptional ability to evoke emotions through music, presenting a daunting task for the songwriter.
The songs for “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be available everywhere December 13.
Enjoy the music of the Pride Lands when “Mufasa: The Lion King” releases in theaters, December 20.
