NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker are hosting an online sit-in protest and conversation on Sunday from the U.S. Capitol steps.
Titled “An Urgent Conversation with the American People,” the livestreamed discussion comes ahead of Congress’ return to session on Monday.
A joint statement from the offices of both officials stated, “Republican leaders have indicated their plans to push through a risky budget proposal in the upcoming weeks, aiming to weaken Medicaid, food aid, and essential support programs for the benefit of the wealthy, at the expense of ordinary people. This period could be crucial for the well-being of seniors, children, and families for many years to come.”
The statement also mentioned that Rep. Jeffries and Sen. Booker will discuss common American principles and the moral and ethical foundations of the nation, highlighting how the proposed budget contradicts these values. Moreover, they intend to reassure viewers of the livestream that their opinions hold significance, particularly at this critical juncture.
Throughout the livestream, the Tri-State officials are being joined by fellow elected members from both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate to discuss the issues that matter to them and their constituents. Groups of curious passersby also found themselves sitting on the Capitol steps listening and weighing in on the conversation.
