‘RHOSLC’ Star Mary Cosby Cries As She Explains Why She And Her Son Opened Up About His Drug Struggles On TV

Mary Cosby from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City has shared an update on her son, Robert Cosby Jr., who recently spoke about his battle with drug addiction on the popular Bravo reality show.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday night (Dec. 4), Mary mentioned to host Andy Cohen that her son is making great progress. She expressed her pride, stating, “Robert is doing so good. I am so proud of him.”

She went on to reveal, “He did seek help by going to rehab, where he underwent a month-long program and successfully completed it. The experience was transformative for him, and he has emerged as a changed person.” Mary also disclosed that Robert Jr.’s wife is currently undergoing treatment at a rehab facility.

During the Nov. 27 episode of RHOSLC, Mary finally sat down with her 21-year-old son to understand why he had been acting differently. He ultimately revealed that he had started using drugs shortly after he turned 16 — and while he only used the “natural stuff” at first, he began taking Xanax regularly after someone offered it to him at a party.

“And then I started doing Xanax with acid. And then Molly with Xanax. Because I really liked Xanax so I’d mix it with everything,” Robert Jr. confessed to his mother, noting that he got to a point where he was taking 10 oxycodone pills at once and “couldn’t even feel it.” Robert Jr. also opened up about feeling suicidal, telling his mom that she was the only reason he didn’t take his own life.

Looking back on the heartbreaking moment, Cohen and actress Bridgett Everett praised Mary for how she handled the difficult conversation.

“I felt like your heart was laid bare, obviously, it’s your son. But, like, I just felt like everything you said was the right thing to say to him,” Everett told the reality star. “He could not have dreamt for better support. What you gave him was beautiful. It really was.”

According to Mary, she didn’t know how their chat was going to go.

“It wasn’t planned. We just came together, Robert and I, and I said, ‘We are gonna do this because we’re gonna help somebody,’” she said as she started to cry. “He didn’t plan what he was gonna say and I didn’t plan. I just said what I felt.”
