Five years, four seasons, a pandemic, countless glances (and countless arguments), Mythic Quest finally did the damn thing.
**Spoilers ahead for the Season 4 finale of Mythic Quest**
There’s probably a sad corner of the internet upset about Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (Rob McElhenney) finally kissing at the end of Season 4 of Mythic Quest, but I’m not one of them. From the start, I’ve seen the amazing chemistry between these actors and believed that despite their characters hesitating to be together, they could overcome the awkwardness if they just went for it. Season 4 has been one of the best seasons yet, largely due to Poppy and Ian being in sync, working together seamlessly like a long-time married couple.
It’s clear that the creators of the game are oblivious to the obvious connection between Poppy and Ian. Even when Poppy almost moved across the world to be with her child’s father, Storm (Chase Yi), she eventually realized her true feelings. They are meant to be together and their relationship might evolve into something beyond just a professional partnership. As a hopeless romantic, I’ve always felt that their interactions, finishing each other’s sentences and knowing each other so well, hinted at a strong romantic bond just waiting to blossom.
Personally, I found it heartbreaking to watch Ian struggle as he slowly lost Poppy to Storm and her pregnancy throughout the season. Their emotional ups and downs added depth to an already intense season for the co-leads of Mythic Quest. Their undeniable connection as each other’s confidants and support system made it painful to witness their separation.
The truth of the matter is that, like life, things don’t always work out the way people think, and given that Nicdao herself confirmed to Decider that this was never the plan, I think that just makes me love it more. Poppy and Ian may not have had this kiss if it wasn’t for her unplanned pregnancy with Storm, her nearly moving halfway around the world, and her, albeit briefly, trying to leave MQ. It’s what makes this moment feel right and not contrived, in my humble opinion as a TV person and just a massive Mythic Quest fan.
As for what is ahead, I’m not sure. Better yet, the way that Poppy and Ian stepped back from each other before the credits began to roll makes me think they are similarly in the dark about what comes next. And, to me, that is the most exciting part because it lays the groundwork for an incredible potential Season 5 storyline.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: Boo hoo, haters, it’s a good day for romance lovers and especially anyone fond of the “friends but also enemies but also business partners to lovers” genre. Wait, is that a trope? It should be.
