SAO PAULO — Two Brazilian nuns have gone viral after dropping an impromptu beatbox and dance session during a Catholic television program.
Sisters Marizele Cassiano and Marisa de Paula, who belong to the “Copiosa Redenção” congregation, were discussing a vocational retreat aired on Brazil’s Pai Eterno – Eternal Father – TV channel. They excitedly introduced a song that speaks to the calling of the religious life.
The pair energetically took center stage, incorporating singing, beatboxing, and choreographed dance moves. To the surprise and delight of viewers, Deacon Giovani Bastos, the show’s host, also joined the performance, mirroring Sister de Paula’s spirited dance moves. This impromptu show has captivated audiences both in Brazil and beyond, garnering millions of views on social media.
“That moment was incredibly spontaneous; whenever there’s a beat, Sister Marisa will dance. As for me, I’m accustomed to singing and beatboxing. Therefore, for us, it felt natural, spontaneous, and quite astonishing to witness its viral spread even outside Brazil,” revealed Sister Marizele Cassiano, the beatboxing nun, in an interview with The Associated Press. The Sisters are deeply committed to supporting young individuals grappling with substance abuse issues. They emphasize that music serves as a potent tool in aiding those in distress.
“Beatboxing, dancing, and the songs itself, are tools that God uses to reach the hearts of the people we work with. And it works! It’s beautiful to see,” said Sister Marizele Cassiano.
While Sister Marisa has no Instagram account, Sister Marizele has surpassed 100,000 followers since her beatboxing went viral.
The sisters also work as vocation promoters, organizing retreats for women interested in pursuing a religious career.
