Retired police officer James Van Schaick described hearing what he interpreted as rapid, automatic gunfire. Looking out from the hotel where he was staying, Van Schaick witnessed people dispersing in different directions in response to the commotion. Although his view was obstructed by the angle from which he observed the scene, he recounted hearing multiple individual gunshots following the initial burst of gunfire.
