The International Criminal Court comprises over 120 member states, with some countries, such as France, having stated their unwillingness to apprehend him. Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán went as far as announcing his intention to disobey the warrant by extending an invitation to Netanyahu to visit Hungary.
There was uncertainty about Netanyahu’s own plans to participate in the event. The Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday that they had not received any information suggesting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would attend the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
They reassured that Poland is a secure nation, and any visiting dignitary receives protection from the Ministry of the Interior. Furthermore, the ministry denounced claims circulating in the U.S. media that Netanyahu might face an arrest in Poland as “fake news.”
The commemoration will be attended by international officials and elderly survivors. It is to take place in Oswiecim, a town that was under German occupation during the war.
More than 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz. Historians say that most of them, about a million, were Jewish, but the victims also included Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, and others.
