The mission to introduce an innovative healing mushroom to the world will continue as Adult Swim has officially announced the renewal of Common Side Effects for a second season prior to the Season 1 finale set to air this Sunday.
Co-created by Joe Bennett (Scavengers Reign) and Steve Hely (Veep), this animated comedic thriller, executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels (King of the Hill), explores the consequences of the unearthing of a mysterious mushroom with life-altering properties.
According to Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, “Joe and Steve have successfully crafted a groundbreaking and genre-defining television series that challenges the boundaries of what ‘adult animation’ can achieve. The audience has also played a crucial role by tuning in to Adult Swim and Max to show their support for the show and spreading the word on social media. This proves that we can indeed have nice things.”
The half-hour series centers around Marshall and Frances, two former high school lab partners who share a remarkable secret: Marshall has discovered the world’s most extraordinary medicine, a mushroom with the ability to heal nearly anything. However, the path to introducing it to the world is fraught with obstacles, as the DEA, big pharma, and global businessmen are all trying to stop them.
The show features the voices of Joseph Lee Anderson, Mike Judge, Martha Kelly, Dave King, and Emily Pendergast.
“We are grateful for the enthusiastic response to Common Side Effects and are thrilled to continue exploring this world with our amazing team and the fans who have embraced the show,” said co-creators Bennett and Hely. “The opportunity to push the boundaries of animation and storytelling on Adult Swim is like a wonderful mushroom dream. Our goal with the show is to transform planet Earth and restore the human spirit. For now, we will settle for a second season.”
The Season 1 finale of Common Side Effects will air this Sunday at 11:30 PM ET/PT on Adult Swim.
Produced for Adult Swim by Bandera Entertainment and Green Street Pictures, Common Side Effects will return for more adventures in Season 2.
