Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi running for US Senate, joining race to replace Senator Dick Durbin

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (WLS) — Illinois Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate following Dick Durbin’s decision not to seek reelection.

Krishnamoorthi is planning three events Friday to kick off his campaign.

“Senator Dick Durbin is a titan who will be remembered as one of the most effective and dedicated public servants in Illinois history. I am honored by the support I have received from friends, family, and community leaders urging me, a fellow native of downstate, to run for the U.S. Senate,” Krishnamoorthi expressed.

One of those events will be In Chicago, another in Schaumburg and another in his hometown of Peoria.

Krishnamoorthi joins Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton in the Democratic field. Potential contenders like Congresswoman Laura Underwood and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel may also enter the race, while Rep. Darin LaHood is considered a potential Republican candidate.
