Greetings from the sports desk below the main deck of the Good Pirate Ship RedState! I had intended to talk about the NHL playoffs in this post, but other sports have taken the spotlight this time. Though Sammy the Shark and Karl the Kraken might not be pleased, we have some comforting news for them. While their favorite NHL teams didn’t make it to the Stanley Cup playoffs this year, their minor league affiliates have not only made it to the postseason but have also advanced to the second round. The Seattle Kraken’s AHL (American Hockey League) affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, are gearing up to face the Abbotsford Canucks. Meanwhile, the San José Sharks’ AHL team, the San José Barracuda, will be taking on the Colorado Eagles in a series. Let’s hope this news brings a smile to Sammy and Karl’s faces…
That, and a fresh box of fish crackers.
Even with the NBA and NHL playoffs underway and baseball games in progress, the biggest sports story from April 24th to 26th was the NFL Draft, held near Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. By this time of year, the tundra in Wisconsin should have thawed. If it hadn’t, the intense heat coming from Deion Sanders’ frustration over his son Shedeur, who played quarterback for him at Colorado, being drafted only in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns, would have surely melted any remaining ice in an instant.
My colleague Bonchie has written twice about the media frenzy surrounding Sanders’ son not being drafted until much later than most football experts and analysts had anticipated.
