According to reports, FX’s popular comedy series English Teacher is close to being renewed for a second season, despite allegations of sexual assault against the show’s creator and lead actor, Brian Jordan Alvarez.
Sources have revealed that the network is on the verge of confirming the return of the show for another season, with plans to potentially restart production later this month.
The show follows Alvarez’s character, a high school English teacher who navigates life as a gay man alongside his quirky colleagues and students. Alongside Alvarez, Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, and Sean Patton also feature prominently in this workplace comedy.
The show became a darling of the fall television slate, offering a more adult version of the lighthearted humor Abbott Elementary brings to ABC. But weeks after the show concluded its first season, Alvarez’s former colleague, Jon Ebeling, alleged in a bombshell Vulture report that the actor sexually assaulted him while filming the web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.
A spokesperson for Alvarez denied the claims in a statement shared with Decider, claiming Alvarez’s interactions with Ebeling were “always entirely consensual – as numerous witnesses have attested.”
In the report, Ebeling claimed he felt “insane pressure” from the English Teacher star to be intimate. He also alleged that Alvarez once performed oral sex on him without his consent while filming the web series.
“I am assuming nobody on set knows what’s going on under the comforter, and I’m just frozen,” Ebeling told the publication. “I didn’t know what to do. I’m on set with my director, who is assaulting me. It was a horrible feeling.”
Alvarez’s lawyer claimed Alvarez believed the incident was consensual. “This was the performative Kabuki theater of a self-described manipulator, who was distorting the situation to ingratiate himself to [Koenig],” Kump said to Vulture, adding that Alvarez believed “Mr. Ebeling was fine with it” and “consented verbally” before filming, which Ebeling denied.
Ebeling filed a police report with the LAPD in September 2024 and reported Alvarez to the Screen Actors Guild.
English Teacher is streaming now on Hulu.
