Sean Lennon criticizes Snow White actress Rachel Zegler following the underwhelming performance of Disney movie

The son of the famous member of the Beatles, John Lennon, and the artist Yoko Ono has recently expressed some unusual thoughts regarding Rachel Zegler, the lead actress in the new live-action Snow White movie.

The West Side Story star, 23, has been at the centre of controversy following Snow White’s disappointing box office performance. 

And Sean Ono Lennon, 48, last week decided to weigh in on the heated discussion with a post on social media attacking Zegler. 

Lennon often shares his opinions on social media platforms, previously known as Twitter, and despite not appearing to have any direct association with Zegler or the film, he decided to make a statement about the young actress.

In a tweet that has since been removed, Lennon remarked, ‘I acknowledge that the criticism may have been excessive. However, she comes across as a self-entitled, unappreciative, and out-of-touch individual. Thus, it is not surprising.’

The remark came under a bizarre thread Lennon wrote discussing his opinion on the physical attractiveness of Zegler and her co-star Gal Gadot.

Posting on X, Lennon waded directly into the heated discussion surrounding Zegler’s controversial casting and conduct

The film pulled in a disappointing $43 million on opening weekend – nearly half of its projected $85 million target 

‘Both Gal Gadot AND Rachel Zegler are exceptionally beautiful women. Some of y’all are bugging.’

He then replied to his own tweet with: ‘Some people are saying “but beauty is on the inside.” That is not the kind of beauty that gets you modeling or acting or even body building jobs. Some people are genetically gifted in the beauty department and that is a fact of life. 

‘There’s a lot you can do to help with style and personality but none of that is going to win you a body building competition, for example, if you don’t have good genetics. Let’s not be babies, physical beauty is not on the inside.’

An X user replied to Lennon defending Zegler, as they said: ‘Both actresses are good performers, yet Zegler does not deserve the vilification that Variety and a lot of Disney “fan boys” are constantly giving her. These kind of people really need to touch grass. I will leave it at that.’

It was to this comment that Lennon replied branding Zegler ‘a spoiled ungrateful and disconnected brat’.

Once poised to be Disney’s crown jewel in its live-action remake arsenal, Snow White now appears to be the studio’s most fraught endeavour to date. 

The film pulled in a disappointing $43 million on opening weekend – nearly half of its projected $85 million target. 

Reddit threads, Disney forums, and entertainment newsfeeds have since been ablaze with scathing commentary, with one user encapsulating the sentiment: ‘A perfect storm of bad ideas gets exactly what it deserves.’

The perfect storm appears to have begun in 2021 with Zegler’s casting. 

While Disney heralded the choice of a Colombian-Polish American actress to play the titular heroine of a German fairy tale as progressive, others declared it to be another instance of Hollywood’s ‘woke’ agenda. 

The backlash intensified when Zegler, in a since-deleted tweet, wrote: ‘yes i am snow white no i am not bleaching my skin for the role.’

Zegler didn’t merely star in the film but also criticized its 1937 animated predecessor, dismissing its themes of true love and Prince Charming as ‘weird’ and outdated.

‘She’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,’ Zegler declared in an interview.

She described Charming as ‘literally a stalker’ and tweeted days after the movie’s official trailer was released in August 2024. 

The film’s marketing was abruptly subdued and there were no red carpet interviews at its Hollywood premiere, limited press invitations at its European debut in a remote Segovia castle, with Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot notably absent from press junkets. 

Zegler’s stance is only part of a wider crisis for Snow White.

The film’s title conspicuously drops any reference to the Seven Dwarfs and for good reason.

Disney promised a ‘different approach’ and in the final film, the dwarfs are reimagined as CGI-created magical gnomes and not portrayed by actors with dwarfism.  

Complicating matters further, Zegler has showed her unwavering support for Palestine amid the assault on Gaza, signing off social media posts with ‘Free Palestine’.

Meanwhile, Gadot is an avid supporter of Israel and even served in the IDF. 

Snow White reportedly cost over $200 million to produce, according to Forbes.
