There was a time when there was an uproar from the left about book bans. However, it seems that book banning is back in style, with Booksmith, a bookstore in a liberal California city, announcing on Instagram that they will no longer carry the “Harry Potter” series or any other books by J.K. Rowling.
The decision came after Rowling announced her support in May 2025 for using her wealth from the Harry Potter series to establish the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, which aims to limit transgender rights in various aspects of life.
A San Francisco bookstore recently stated that they are discontinuing the sale of J.K. Rowling’s works, including the popular “Harry Potter” series, due to the author’s anti-transgender stance and activism.

“With this announcement, we’ve decided to stop carrying her books,” it added. “We don’t know exactly what her new ‘women’s fund’ will entail, but we know that we aren’t going to be a part of it.”
It went on:
However, there’s one slight problem with the shop’s announcement, and that is that Rowling never said the Fund was dedicated to “removing transgender rights” from public spaces or workplaces.
What the famed “Harry Potter” author said that the shop, apparently, didn’t like was that Rowling was funding it personally after sharing the following:
The post was in a longer thread announcing the creation of JK Rowling’s Women’s Fund.
A description of it read:
“It provides women with the means and confidence to bring to justice cases that make legal precedents, force policy change, and make positive contributions to women’s lives in the future.”
The author has been one of the most staunch supporters of women-only spaces, making it clear that biological men have no business being in protected female spaces, angering transgender activists who label her the ridiculous term TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist).
In a recent X post, Rowling torched author Vikki Patis, who wrote that “Anyone still supporting TERFs in publishing can [..] all the way off. You can not read, review, promote, or sell their bigoted bile and still pretend you support queer authors at the same time. We [..] see you.”
“And we see the entitled, bratty, tantruming little Veruca Salts who believe that only they, and those who share their luxury beliefs, should be permitted to publish books,” Rowling wrote on X.

As of this publication, Rowling has yet to respond to the SF bookstore. However, given her recent comments about not censoring or punishing people for their beliefs, it’s fair to say that she would disagree with the Booksmith store banning her books.
I’m old enough to remember that it was only a year ago that leftists attacked and accused Republicans of banning books when some school districts across the country removed age-inappropriate and sexually explicit books from school libraries.
Rowling has been relentless in her support of women’s only sports and spaces amid an onslaught from LGBTQ advocates, including recently, breaking down the transgender movement and what insanity it has become.
