CHICAGO (WLS) — A teenager was shot near a North Side high school on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a soft lockdown on campus, officials said.
A shooting occurred in the 5900-block of North California Avenue in the Arcadia Terrace neighborhood, close to Mather High School, around 3:15 p.m. according to Chicago police.

A 17-year-old boy was inside a vehicle when someone approached him, took out a gun and fired shots, striking him in the arm, police said.
Police said the victim was taken to Evanston Hospital in good condition.
Following the incident, the school’s principal communicated with families, explaining that the shooting took place during dismissal time. As a precaution, the school implemented a soft lockdown, ensuring the safety of all students and staff members, who fortunately were unharmed.
Area Three detectives are investigating.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

The protection and well-being of the students are always the foremost concern, and we want to update you on the recent event near our school premises. After the shots were fired in the vicinity during dismissal, we swiftly moved everyone indoors, informed the relevant authorities, and initiated a soft lockdown. Once the Chicago Police Department and CPS Office of Safety and Security confirmed there was no direct threat to the school, normal operations resumed for the remainder of the day. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the students and staff, and all individuals are accounted for and safe.
