Descendants fans shouldn’t be holding their breath to see Sofia Carson back in her Evie wig anytime soon.
Carson expressed in a recent Zoom interview with Decider her feelings about entering the world of Descendants without Cameron. She stated that it would be difficult for her as Cameron was an integral part of the core group known as the core four.
The former Disney Channel stars is referring to the shocking death of her Descendants co-star Cameron Boyce, who died when he was just 20 years old in 2019, due to a seizure caused by a pre-existing medical condition. His sudden death came just a month before the premiere of Descendants 3, the third film in the popular musical franchise, directed by Kenny Ortega.
Boyce played Carlos—the goofy, dog-loving “villain kid” of Cruella de Ville—and starred alongside Dove Cameron as Mal (daughter of Maleficient from Sleeping Beauty), Booboo Stewart as Jay (son of Jafar from Aladdin), and Carson as Evie (daughter of Evil Queen from Snow White), in the musical franchise that launched in 2015. Since Boyce’s death, a fourth spin-off film, Descendants: The Rise of the Red, was released on Disney+, with an all-new cast.
When asked if she would ever want to reprise her role as Evie, Carson said, “No. I couldn’t.”
But, she added, “I’m so happy that the franchise is still alive and well, and so beloved by so many people. Being Evie is truly one of the greatest gifts of my life, and I adore her so dearly.”
That said, Carson says she’s still in regular contact with Dove Cameron and Booboo Stewart.
“We’re forever connected after those films, and after the loss that we experienced with our Cam. We get to see each other every year, once a year, at Cam’s gala for the Cameron Boyce Foundation, which we all support,” Carson said. “It’s always really special, because it always brings back really beautiful memories of that time together. “
The Cameron Boyce Foundation is a non-profit organization created by his family following his death. According to the foundation’s website, the organization is dedicated to reduce gun violence and help work toward a cure for epilepsy “through digital campaigns, programmatic partnerships, and financial support.” You can donate to the foundation here.
