Protests against ICE raids and President Donald Trump’s immigration policies are ongoing in Los Angeles. Sunny Hostin and the ladies of “The View” are questioning the necessity of deploying 700 U.S. Marines and 4,000 National Guardsmen by the POTUS to address the situation.
Whoopi Goldberg, whose family resides in LA, mentioned that the protests were initially peaceful until additional law enforcement was sent by Trump, which heightened tensions. Hostin, echoing these sentiments, shared that the people she interacted with also reported similar accounts.
Hostin expressed, “I spoke to five individuals living and working in LA, and they all mentioned that the protests were well-organized, non-violent, and limited to a small area within the vast expanse of LA. It’s my belief that any crisis in Los Angeles is a result of ICE’s actions.”
The protests started when ICE raids began targeting undocumented residents and workers last Friday (June 6). While the protests have been largely peaceful, there have also been incidents of clashes between some demonstrators and local law enforcement (rocks have been thrown at police officers, cars have been set on fire, and businesses have been looted, for example).
California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused Trump of trying to “manufacture chaos” for his own political gain by deploying the military to Los Angeles to stop the protests, per Time.
“U.S. Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They are heroes. They shouldn’t be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President,” Newsom wrote on X. “This is un-American.”
However, Hostin — who warned of a potential “civil war” in Monday’s (June 9) episode of The View —believes Trump is masterminding a bigger plan.
“Trump is militarizing that state as a test run to make sure that he can do it in places like New York, that he can do it in other sanctuary cities,” she said. “There is a plan to this, in my view.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
