Kiss kiss, bye bye.
Just about four weeks following the conclusion of Season 4 of Mythic Quest and a mere seven days after Apple TV+ decided to ax the show, a revised final episode is now available on the streaming platform. This updated episode provides a neatly wrapped-up conclusion, contrasting the original Season 4 ending.
The initial episode, which debuted in March, featured a contentious kiss between Ian Grimm (played by Rob McElhenney) and Poppy Li (portrayed by Charlotte Nicdao) in its closing moments. This kiss sparked a debate among fans of the series. While many embraced the romantic gesture after five years of suspense surrounding their relationship, others strongly objected to disrupting the platonic bond they shared.
However, in the revised finale, instead of initiating a kiss when Poppy returns from the airport, Ian opts for a hug, and they mutually agree to return to work. This firm decision emphasizes that their relationship was destined to remain that of close friends and colleagues, despite their interdependence.
At the time of the showâs cancellation, the executive producers â Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and McElhenney â announced that in the wake of the show ending prematurely, they would be re-editing the Season 4 finale to serve as a proper goodbye.
âEndings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, âMythic Questâ is coming to a close,â said Ganz, Hornsby, and McElhenney. âWeâre so proud of the show and the world we got to buildâand deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us.â
âTo our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Appleâs blessing, we made one final update to our last episodeâso we could say goodbye, instead of just game over,” their statement concluded.
It’s not the most surprising change, especially since, when Decider sat down with Nicdao in March to discuss the kiss and the then-season finale, she said she thinks the two characters knew that they crossed the rubicon.
âI donât think either of them think that was a good idea,â Nicdao said. “And I donât think either of them thinks that this is about to lead into some beautiful, whirlwind romance. I think both of them know that they, excuse my language, fucked up.”
Mythic Quest was one of the first shows to premiere on Apple TV+ back in January 2020 and was renewed for a second season prior to its premiere. The series — which also stars Danny Pudi, Jessie Ennis, Imani Hakim, Ashly Burch, and Naomi Ekperigin — followed a group of employees at Mythic Quest Studios, a video game making company led by Ian and Poppy. In 2021, the show was renewed by Apple TV+ for a third and fourth season, with the installments releasing in 2022 and 2025, respectively. Additionally, the streaming service just dropped a four-episode anthology series, Side Quest, as a spin-off from the original.
All four seasons of Mythic Quest are currently streaming on Apple TV+.
