PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — It’s became a yearly tradition, and 2025 did not disappoint.
Before the Met Gala welcomed celebrities and the media on the red carpet, the Brooklyn Public Library organized a fashion event of its own on May 4, known as The People’s Ball 2025 with the theme “Style is a Revolution.”
During the event, librarians allowed music to play loudly as local designers and models showcased their creativity on the catwalk, emphasizing artistry and community spirit. The affair showcased some of the most impressive styles from the borough. Designer Rafael Yau Lee viewed the annual gathering as an opportunity for those who could not attend or afford the Met Gala, stating, “It’s a fantastic chance to strut your stuff, have your photo taken, and experience that Met Gala vibe!”
Alicia Rigues caught everyone’s attention with her dress crafted from banned book covers, acknowledging the event for bringing neighbors closer together. Rigues expressed, “It’s a wonderful platform for our community to connect and express themselves artistically.”
Designer Jen Shoemaker’s look was as thoughtful as it was eyecatching. “It’s all sustainable. My whole outfit is either thrifted or upcycled from things that I’ve already worn.”
