We are currently in the era of “Gilded Age Girl” summer, as The Buccaneers on Apple TV+ has finally made its much-anticipated return to our screens. The initial season of The Buccaneers offered a delightfully dramatic interpretation of Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, focusing on wealthy American heiresses seeking aristocratic British husbands. Rather than faithfully following the author’s intentions, the show took a unique approach by challenging Wharton’s themes. The heroines in The Buccaneers displayed strength in a world that was inherently biased against women, while many of their suitors proved to be charming rather than disappointing. Season 1 of The Buccaneers was filled with sensuality, surprises, and an excellent selection of music.
The conclusion of the first season of The Buccaneers left viewers on the edge of their seats, especially as Nan St. George (played by Kristine Frøseth) made a bold decision to marry Theo, the Duke of Tintagel (portrayed by Guy Remmers), to help her sister Jinny (played by Imogen Waterhouse) escape her abusive marriage to Lord Seadown (played by Barney Fishwick). Despite believing she was in love with Theo, Nan realized her true feelings lay with Theo’s best friend Guy Thwarte (played by Matthew Broome). On the eve of her lavish society wedding, Nan shares a romantic moment with Guy and contemplates eloping with him, but ultimately gives Jinny the opportunity to start a new life with Guy.
Additionally, Season 1 of The Buccaneers concludes with a shocking revelation that Nan’s biological mother, whom she thought was dead, is actually present at Tintagel Castle for the wedding. The mystery surrounding her mother’s identity, the reasons for giving Nan up, and the implications for the future storyline leave fans eagerly anticipating the next season. (And is it just us, or does she bear a striking resemblance to Leighton Meester?)
If you’re one of the many Buccaneers fans who can’t wait to catch up with Nan, Jinny, Conchita (Alisha Boe), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel (Josie Totah), Honoria (Mia Threapleton), and all their friends, lovers, and frenemies, you’re in luck!
