Top viral moments from SNL50 featuring Kim Kardashian’s funny skit about her bottom and Ryan Reynolds’ cringeworthy joke about Blake Lively

Saturday Night Live marked its 50th anniversary with a special featuring a lineup of guest stars, one of which was Kim Kardashian.

Kim, a 44-year-old reality star, surprised viewers by appearing on the SNL50 special as one of the Maharelle Sisters from the Finger Lakes, regular characters on the show’s spoof of The Lawrence Welk Show.

Kim’s appearance, which involved Kristen Wiig drumming on her behind, drew both gasps and cheers from the audience. However, the show also had other notable moments, including a somewhat awkward one with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively amidst Lively’s legal feud with Justin Baldoni.

Fred Armisen was back as Welk, and he was hosting hosting the three Maharelle sisters from the Finger Lakes, who were played this time by Kim, Scarlett Johansson and Ana Gasteyer.

Will Ferrell upstaged them as Robert Goulet by riding in on a motorcycle with a sidecar.

He was entranced by the trio, until Kristen Wiig made her customary appearance as the forgotten fourth sister, Dooneese.

She had the character’s long doll hands, extended forehead and snaggletooth.

‘Forehead!’ he exclaimed.

Kim, who has lately been expanding into acting after becoming one of the biggest reality stars of all time, got a chance to sing in character with Ana and Scarlett in a babyish voice. 

But they were interrupted when Kristen began to rub her tiny hands over their faces.

Kim was a good sport as she turned around to show off her famous derriere while Kristen started spanking it with her doll arms.

The backing band’s drummer got in on the action and doubled Kristen’s rhythm on the drum set.

Despite initially being turned off by Kristen’s character, Will found himself oddly turned on by her after a third doll hand appeared out of nowhere as she tried to pry open his mouth. 

‘I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I love you,’ he said, surprising himself.

Later in the evening, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kicked off a star-studded segment of audience questions, modeled after a cliched opening-monologue tactic.

The comedy stars and former Weekend Update cohosts both looked glamorous in all-black as they let the biggest stars in the audience pipe up with questions.

The most surprising of the questions came from Ryan Reynolds, who was accompanied by his wife Blake Lively.

The two have been laying low in recent weeks amid Blake’s sexual harassment lawsuit against her It Ends With Us director and costar Justin Baldoni, as well as his subsequent $400 million defamation lawsuit against her, Ryan and her publicist.

Shockingly, Ryan — who did all the talking — even alluded to the controversies when he piped up.

The Deadpool star put on a comically cagey expression after Tina asked him how things were going.

‘Great,’ he replied in a perfect deadpan while folding his hands nervously. ‘Why, what have you heard?’ 

Blake then looked up at him with a painfully over-the-top expression of concern, before relaxing into her normal smile.

For his bizarre question, Ryan asked if the material used to create the show’s prosthetic coneheads was edible. 

‘Edible? No. And based on them being made in 1975, I’d assume they’re highly toxic,’ the women replied. 

‘Oh, OK,’ he said, playing it cool. 

‘So if somebody hypothetically took a couple nibbles backstage and got excited, should they go to the hospital or should they…?’ Ryan continued, before trailing off.

The celebrity cavalcade of questions had numerous stars who have been part of the cast or involved with the show taking a moment to show off their comedy skills.

Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson kicked off the questions by asking what Tim Meadows had whispered to musical guest Sade back on March 18, 1993. 

Comedian Nate Bargatze asked who the woman was backstage who took his pants off between sketches when he hosted, so Tina and Amy introduced the audience to Donna Richards, who helps dress the hosts and assists with their quick changes. 

They asked Donna who her favorite host was, and she replied that it was ‘Jason Momoa’ without a moment’s hesitation. 

Then they got an email question from Jon Lovitz, asking why he was seated across the street in the American Girl Dolls store. ‘I’m not mad, I just want to know why,’ he said. 

It was because Julia Louis-Dreyfus brought her service dog, but then she clarified that the dog was blind and she was just here for him.

The Veep star narrated the exchange to her dog and said the ‘intense energy’ he was feeling to his side was Adam Driver. 

‘He is an absolutely incredible actor. And right now he is acting like he is not attracted to me,’ she whispered.

When Cher’s name was called, she clarified that she had no question. 

Keith Richards wondered if anybody had seen a scarf he lost back in 1998. 

Zach Galifianakis, suspiciously draped in a purple paisley scarf, protested too much and urged them to get on with it.

A sensitive Jon Hamm asked his friends Tina and Amy if he was really funny, and they said he was game for anything. 

Then Bad Bunny asked the same question, but in Spanish, and they didn’t have any trouble responding that he was funny, though they asked him not to tell Jon that they said so.

Seth Meyers then spoke up and pointedly asked if the whole Q&A sketch was just a calculated decision to let celebrities who aren’t in other parts of the show still get time on screen.

‘Really? It doesn’t seem that way to me,’ Tina replied. 

‘What do you think, Reverend Al Sharpton and Ray Romano?’ she continued, throwing it to the two men, who sat next to each other.

The show even referenced some of its more controversial past hosts.

After Fred Armisen asked why one of his sketches didn’t make it out of dress rehearsal years later, Tina and Amy tried to move past it by suggesting he resubmit the rewritten sketch.

‘Great, next time [Kevin] Spacey hosts!’ he cheered. 

The segment ended with a long tirade from Peyton Manning urging Lorne Michaels to never retire because he hated the indignities of having to film countless terrible ads. 

Another of the SNL50 highlights was a sketch featuring the return of Kate McKinnon’s fan-favorite character, the alien abductee Colleen Rafferty.

But this time fans were seeing double when Oscar winner Meryl Streep put her skills to use as the character’s mother, Colleen Sr.

Kate, who was speaking to Space Force members Jon Hamm and Aidy Bryant at the Pentagon, was joined by fellow abductees played by Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson.

Harrelson looked as if he used some method acting training to play a supremely stoned abductee. 

Saturday Night Live kicked off its grand 50th anniversary celebration in a surprise manner by eschewing its usual cold open.

Instead, Paul Simon paid tribute to the late George Harrison by performing his Simon & Garfunkel classic Homeward Bound, this time with Sabrina Carpenter filling in for Garfunkel.

The 83-year-old singer noted he performed the song with the former Beatle back in 1976 on SNL, while Sabrina, 25, joked that she wasn’t alive back then — and neither were her parents. 

‘It’s Saturday night!’ they cried out after wrapping up the touching performance in a nod to the standard cold-open tag. 

The 50th anniversary schedule featured opening credits that drew from various SNL eras, before the show’s longtime regular guest Steve Martin stepped out in a tux.

He took a shot at former cast member Bill Murray by joking that they made sure he wouldn’t miss the show by not inviting him. 

John Mulaney also made a quick appearance to poke fun at Steve for his lack of style.

Then his Only Murders In The Building costar Martin Short dropped by.

Steve joked that he was the ‘only Canadian who wasn’t in Schitt’s Creek,’ and he cut him off by inquiring if he had his passport with him, before calling in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to take him away.

Later, Kenan Thompson took over as the host of the regular Black Jeopardy sketch.

Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Eddie Murphy were the contestants, but, confusingly, Eddie was playing Tracy and trying to mimic his famous halting delivery.

Tom Hanks appeared toward the end of the sketch to reprise his Trump-loving white contestant who had a surprising number of — superficial — similarities to the other contestants.
