An Air India passenger plane carrying more than 200 people crashed after taking off from an airport in the Indian city of Ahmedabad Thursday.Â
Local media showed smoke billowing from the crash site near the airport in northwestern India.Â

The aircraft involved was Air India Flight AI 171, specifically a Boeing 787. It was transporting a minimum of 244 individuals. Early investigations suggest that the crash transpired in a residential area approximately five minutes subsequent to its departure at approximately 1:38 p.m.
The flight was bound for London’s Gatwick Airport.Â
