A 14-year-old boy from Chicago is currently in a coma as a result of a tragic incident that occurred during a family vacation in Mexico. The boy, his father, and his uncle were victims of a shooting, as reported by local sources and a fundraiser set up to support the family.
Reports from officials in Durango, Mexico, indicate that Vicente Peña Jr., aged 38, and Antonio “Tony” Fernandez, aged 44, both hailing from Chicago, lost their lives in the recent shooting incident. Another individual, Jorge Eduardo Vargas Aguirre, 22, also tragically lost his life in the same incident.
Pena, his son, and Fernandez are identified as U.S. citizens, while Vargas Aguirre was a local resident and a relative of the other victims, according to the Durango Attorney General’s Office as cited in a report by ABC News.
A fundraiser on SpotFund created by the 14-year-old’s mother says the teenager “traveled to Durango, Mexico with his father, brother and uncle to visit family and celebrate his 14th [birthday].”
The State Department and Durango-area police did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.
The State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Mexico, meaning tourists should exercise increased caution when visiting the United States’ southern neighbor. The advisory says “[v]iolent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico.”
