In a strategic maneuver, President Donald Trump has directed that control over Greenland be moved from the U.S. European Command to the U.S. Northern Command. This decision aims to strengthen America’s hold on Arctic defense amid increasing global tensions.
The Pentagon officially announced this transfer on Tuesday, stating that it includes the Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost U.S. military facility, which will now fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Northern Command.
The base, located north of the Arctic Circle, is critical to U.S. and NATO missile warning and space surveillance operations.
“The President has recently made modifications to the Unified Command Plan. As a result of this adjustment, Greenland has been reassigned from the U.S. European Command’s area of responsibility to that of the U.S. Northern Command,” explained Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell in a statement released on Tuesday.

Though the change marks a clear shift in strategic oversight, initial indications suggest the impact will be mostly administrative. No major operational disruptions are expected, according to a U.S. defense official familiar with the transition.
