GRAPEVINE, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities have detained a suspect in connection with the passing of an 18-year-old who lost her life in a jet ski collision while kayaking in Texas during the recent holiday period.
Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez has been taken into custody in relation to the demise of Ava Moore, as confirmed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Furthermore, a male individual who accompanied Gonzalez and aided in her departure from the scene has also been apprehended, according to a communication from Paxton’s office.
The tragedy unfolded on Grapevine Lake on Sunday evening when a jet ski carrying two women collided with and fatally injured Moore, as reported by the Grapevine Police Department.
The passenger remained on the scene to be interviewed by first responders while the operator fled with the man, according to police. A news release from Paxton’s office said Gonzalez and the man were tracked down by law enforcement, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Grapevine Police Department, the Dallas Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Gonzalez, a native of Venezuela, and the man, who was not publicly identified, are in the country illegally, according to Paxton’s office.
Earlier, police had released a photo of the suspect, asking the public to help identify her.
Grapevine Lake is a reservoir in north Texas.
“Our thoughts are with Ava’s family and friends during this difficult time. Texas Game Wardens remain committed to keeping our public waters safe,” Grapevine Police said in a statement.
