From historical dramas to sex comedies, you won’t be disappointed by this week’s new releases on streaming. Not sure which new releases to check out? Let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.
Tyler Perry’s latest film for Netflix, The Six Triple Eight, is out this week on the streamer. The film is the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, was the only predominantly Black unit in the Women’s Army Corps unit, who faced prejudice and segregation while deployed in Eurpoe. On Max, check out the streaming release of Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 starring Nicholas Hoult, and on Peacock, Stephanie Hsu leads a solid comedic ensemble in the new series Laid.
Kerry Washington stars as Captain Charity Adams in The Six Triple Eight, the Netflix film about a women’s Army Corps battalion comprised almost entirely of women of color who were sent to Europe in 1945. Tasked with delivering over 17 million pieces of backlogged mail to soldiers overseas, the women faced mortal danger in addition to segregation and racism while deployed. The film co-stars Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, and Kylie Jefferson with appearances from Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon.
In the new Peacock series Laid, Stephanie Hsu plays Ruby, a self-absorbed 33-year-old woman who discovers that everyone she has ever had sex with is dead (or is dying). With the help of her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet), she attempts to figure out how and why this keeps happening – is the universe messing with her, is there actual foul play involved? With the help of a terrific ensemble cast including John Early, Michael Angarano, Tommy Martinez, and Chloe Fineman, hopefully she’ll get some answers.
The Clint Eastwood-directed Juror #2 arrives this week to digital (before heading to Max on Dec. 20). The film stars Nicholas Hoult as a man selected to be on the jury of a murder case, who realizes he might be the one responsible for the crime. facing a moral dilemma, he must decide whether to come forward with what he knows, or convict another man for his own wrongdoing. The film co-stars Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, and Kiefer Sutherland.
