A Venezuelan migrant has been taken into custody for the sixth time within the past year for reportedly stealing from a woman using a firearm, shortly after legal charges against him were dismissed by prosecutors in a city that provides sanctuary to immigrants in Illinois.
Edmonds Peraza Cortez, 25, is facing one felony count of armed robbery with a firearm, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Cortez allegedly was riding a bike on April 11 when he approached a 41-year-old woman, brandishing a gun and yelling, “Money! Money!”Â
GarcÃa’s comments drew a strong rebuke from Chicago Flips Red Vice President Danielle Carter-Walters.Â
“It’s ironic that Mr. GarcÃa is a resident of Chicago, yet seems unaware of the issues occurring in our neighborhood. If he were to visit, he would witness the prevalence of gang-related graffiti, the presence of Tren de Aragua signs, and the activity of MS-13,” stated Carter-Walters during testimony. “He would notice the shelters being built across the park, along with the abundance of discarded needles in the area.”
During a court session held on Thursday, a judge decreed that Cortez must remain in detention until formal charges are brought against him, emphasizing, “The accused is facing a highly severe accusation. I perceive him as a threat to society. Therefore, I deem the defendant’s confinement as justified and proper.”
