Putin, however, still has demands:
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia generally supports the ceasefire proposal put forward by the U.S., pending further discussion on the specifics. He stressed the importance of the ceasefire leading to a long-term resolution of the conflict.
Putin expressed agreement with the idea of stopping the hostilities but added that the ultimate goal should be to establish a sustainable peace by addressing the underlying issues causing the crisis.
Furthermore, Putin highlighted the situation of Ukrainian forces currently besieged in Russia’s Kursk region, pointing out the need to clarify their intentions regarding disarmament and surrender before implementing any ceasefire measures.
He also noted that it’s necessary to develop a mechanism to control possible breaches of the truce. Another issue, he said, is whether Ukraine could use the 30-day ceasefire to continue mobilization and rearmament.
