Here's why a flare-up between India and Pakistan over Kashmir matters

India and Pakistan have escalated their tensions over the disputed Kashmir region following an attack on mostly Indian tourists, which New Delhi accused Pakistan of orchestrating.

Pakistan has denied involvement in the massacre of 26 tourists in Kashmir. The aftermath of the attack has seen both countries imposing diplomatic and trade sanctions on each other, sparking concerns of potential military clashes.

Rights groups, including the U.N., have pointed fingers at New Delhi for human rights violations in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Allegations include civilian deaths and arbitrary detentions carried out by Indian forces, tarnishing India’s human rights reputation and prompting calls for global intervention to hold the country accountable.

Militants fighting against Indian rule have also killed scores of civilians, including Hindu pilgrims.

India has used military response against militants as part of its efforts to eradicate “terrorism,” saying it threatens regional stability.
