Woman arrested in California after discovery of 27 deceased horses

A California woman is facing charges after 27 dead horses were found across multiple properties outside of Sacramento, police say. 

Law enforcement uncovered the findings in Clements while executing search warrants in connection to an ongoing investigation of animal neglect, as announced by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

During the operation, officials found several emaciated horses at the location, lacking adequate access to food and water, along with about 27 deceased horses.

Animal Services Officers and onsite veterinarians promptly initiated the assessment and treatment of the horses. Following thorough evaluations, 16 horses were saved and are now under the care of professionals at Oakdale Equine Rescue. They will ensure the horses receive proper nourishment, medical care, and rehabilitation.

She is facing charges of Cruelty to an animal, Threatening a public official, Criminal threats and Possession of a short-barrel shotgun, investigators say. 

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office released an image showing at least one of the malnourished horses found in Clements on Wednesday.
