A bitter chill is seeing in the New Year as temperatures are set to plummet at the start of 2024. A polar vortex is expected to sweep the UK during the middle of January bringing with it a week-long freeze.

Not quite the 2018 Beast From The East weather front, but sure enough, it will include icy conditions. Met Office experts cannot accurately predict snow falling two days before the date, however, other weather maps from WXCharts show areas of Britain set to be hit by snow just a few days after New Year.

Temperatures are due to plummet to a chilly -7C on January across Scotland with the mercury dipping across mainland Britain to just below freezing – and it could be more than just frost on the way. From the northern edge of Scotland all the way down to the Midlands, the country is braced for crisp white snow on January 10, according to weather charts.

Parts of North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire are included in the snow predictions from WXCharts with snow due at around 6am on Wednesday, January 10. This tallies up with the Met Office long forecast covering dates between January 4 and January 13.

It states: “This period will start in an unsettled fashion, with showers in many places, and these will be heavy at times, with temperatures around normal for early January. During the rest of the period there will be a gradual trend towards more settled and somewhat colder conditions with some frosty nights (perhaps becoming widespread and severe over time).

“Occasional unsettled spells are still possible, but these generally much more regionalised, and infrequent than conditions of late. As temperatures fall, the chance of any precipitation falling as sleet and snow increases, particularly over high ground and especially over northern parts of the UK, but not exclusively so by any means. As well as frost and ice by night, some freezing fog is likely to develop as well.”

Over the month as a whole, Met Office experts say there is an even greater chance of people being impacted by “cold, ice and snow”. Forecasters added: “Currently the chance of widespread severe cold is still deemed low, but still the risk of impacts from cold, ice and snow is greater than normal.”
