White House withdraws Rep. Elise Stefanik's nomination for UN ambassador over tight GOP House margin

The White House unexpectedly withdrew Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. This surprising decision came after concerns were raised about the narrow majority held by Republicans in the House that had delayed her confirmation.

Trump confirmed the decision in a Truth Social post on Thursday, saying that it was “essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress.”

President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of unity, stating that it is crucial for achieving their mission. He highlighted Stefanik’s significant contribution to their efforts and requested her to continue serving in Congress, acknowledging her as a key ally.

Stefanik, a New York Republican, was selected by Trump to represent the United States at the UN shortly after his reelection in November. While considered one of the less controversial Cabinet choices, her confirmation remained uncertain due to the slim majority held by House Republicans. Despite her nomination progressing out of committee in January, she faced ongoing uncertainty regarding final approval for several months.

It had seemed as if Stefanik’s nomination would advance to the Senate floor in recent weeks, given two U.S. House special elections in Florida in districts that Trump easily won in 2024. Filling those vacant GOP seats would have allowed Stefanik to finally resign from the House and given Republicans, who currently hold 218 seats, a little more breathing room on passing legislation in a growingly divided Congress. Democrats hold 213 seats.

The White House declined to comment and Stefanik’s office did not return our request for comment.
