Who Is Luigi Magione? The Ivy League Grad Accused of Killing UHC CEO Brian Thompson

On Monday, New York authorities provided only limited details regarding the individual apprehended in relation to the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson that occurred last Wednesday.

According to NBC News, Luigi Mangione, 26 is due in court Monday night on gun charges. Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee believed he resembled widely publicized photos of Thompson’s alleged killer and called the police.

It’s worth noting that Mangione has not yet been charged with Thompson’s slaying, though he is awaiting extradition to New York — where the shooting transpired.

Shortly after Mangione’s arrest, New York officials held a press coverage in which they hinted at the motive in Thompson’s murder. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione, a data engineer with a master’s from the University of Pennsylvania, “has some ill will towards corporate America.” However, they declined to reveal a specific motive.

In addition to allegedly having a gun with a silencer and fake IDs, Mangione reportedly also had a two-page manifesto that denounced the healthcare industry. The manifesto also encouraged

On his X page, Mangione’s header photo shows an X-ray of a spine with screws in it. NBC reported that investigators are looking into whether it is relevant to Thompson’s shooting.

Mangione was apparently active on social media, with accounts on X (formerly Twitter), Goodreads, Facebook, and Instagram. He reportedly gave Ted Kaczynski’s manifesto a favorable review on Goodreads — where his account was privated following his arrest. Kaczynski, the Harvard-educated domestic terrorist known as the Unabomber, sent bombs through the mail between 1978 and 1995.

“It’s easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it’s simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out,” Mangione reportedly wrote, referring to Kaczynski’s manifesto.

Kenny said Mangione was born in Maryland and his last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii. He has no prior arrests in New York, per officials.
