Leave the World Behind dominated Netflix last week.
From December 4 to 10, the new apocalyptic thriller from director Sam Esmail racked up a whopping 41.7M views, easily making it No. 1 among English-language films and the most-watched title of the week. This is especially impressive, considering that the film landed on Netflix on December 8, after a short theatrical window.
For context, second place went to Family Switch with just 18.6M views (which is still fairly significant viewership, but also highlights the interest in Leave the World Behind). Leo, Adam Sandler’s animated film, held onto third place with 14.2M views, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed to race to No. 4 with 13.2M views.
Over on the TV side of things, Obliterated took over the top spot from Squid Game: The Challenge. In its second week on the list, the comedy series took home 9M views.
The Squid Game reality spinoff didn’t fall too far though, coming in third with 6.6M views during the week that the very first winner was crowned. In second place was Netflix’s latest YA drama, My Life with the Walter Boys.
Part 1 of the sixth and final season of The Crown took sixth place with 2.5M views and Season 5 of Virgin River took eighth in its eighth week on the list with 2.2M views.
Also on Tuesday, Netflix pulled back the curtain on nearly every title in its library by releasing a new bi-annual report with viewership data for 18,000 titles — acquired and original — for the first six months of the year. While the data isn’t entirely comprehensive, it does document the highs, lows and in-betweens of the platform instead of delivering the customary lists of only the top-performing programming.
This is significant, as its the first time that any streamer has given this much insight into performance on the platform. It’s not entirely surprising that it’s coming from Netflix, given that the streamer has previously set the standard for reporting audience data. According to Netflix, the viewership adds up to about 100B hours viewed from January to June.
