Aaron Rodgers speaks out for first time since Achilles injury

Aaron Rodgers has finally spoken in the wake of the devastating Achilles tendon rupture he suffered on “Monday Night Football.”

The New York Jets quarterback published a new Instagram post on Wednesday evening, in which he said he is “deeply touched and humbled” by all the messages of support he has received since falling to the MetLife Stadium turf four plays into Monday’s eventual win over the Buffalo Bills. It serves as Rodgers‘ first public comment since the injury, which will cost the four-time NFL MVP the remainder of the 2023 season.

“Heartbroken” Rodgers will soldier on

Rodgers began by thanking everyone who reached out to him over the past 48 hours and said he would try to respond to every attempt to contact him.

“I’m completely heartbroken and moving through all of the emotions, but (I’m) deeply touched and humbled by the support and love,” Rodgers said, punctuating the sentence with a broken heart emoji. “Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I begin the healing process today.”

Rodgers concluded the post by expressing his pride in his Jets teammates for pulling out the upset win over Buffalo — and also with what appears to be a promise that he will return to the NFL in 2024.

“The night is darkest before the dawn,” the 39-year-old wrote. “And I shall rise yet again. Proud of my guys, 1-0.”

Support from Sauce

Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner was among the first to comment on Rodgers‘ post with a heartwarming anecdote that demonstrates how the veteran quarterback has been able to ingratiate himself to his new teammates.

“I did our handshake with the air today,” Gardner wrote. “Get well soon, bro.”

All-Pro Gardner and the Jets defense will be counted on even more in light of Rodgers’ injury — and early indications are that the unit is for real. New York‘s defense forced Bills quarterback Josh Allen into four turnovers on Monday night, which helped backup quarterback Zach Wilson steer the game into overtime — where undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson won it with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.
