After the tragedy of the death of his new-born son, Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a period of leave by Manchester United and he will not take part in Tuesday’s fixture with Liverpool.

Manchester United will head to Anfield without a recognised centre-forward, although the club are keen to make clear that family issues of this scale are a priority.

“Family is more important than everything, and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones in this immensely difficult time,” a club statement read.

“As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening. We underline the family’s request for privacy.”

Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed the news on Monday

The news was relayed to the public by a short social media post by Ronaldo on Monday, reaffirming his sadness and desire for privacy at such a difficult time for his partner, Georgina Rodriguez and himself.

“It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away, it is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live in this moment with some hope and happiness,” Ronaldo posted on Instagram.

“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support, we’re all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.”

Manchester United and Liverpool will hold a minute’s applause

As part of a joint-show of support from both Liverpool and Manchester United, there is a plan for a minute’s applause to be held in the seventh minute of Tuesday’s Premier League fixture.
