Statement
The Spanish Rugby Federation confirmed the shocking news in a statement, saying: “We regret to inform you of the death overnight of Kawa Leauma, who suffered a strange accident after Spain’s game against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.”
He added: “In accordance with the wishes of her wife, who is currently traveling to the Dutch capital, we are unable to give more information at this time and ask for the utmost respect for her and her family.
“Rest in peace Kawa.”
Leauma, who had traveled to the Netherlands with the Spanish rugby team for a Six Nations B match against the Netherlands, is believed to have fallen about 25 feet from a shopping mall terrace.
The Auckland, New Zealand-born player was rushed to hospital for surgery.
Ordizia Rugby Elkartea, the Spanish team from the Basque Country where he played, had admitted that the latest hospital update they had received yesterday was not promising and would need more operations.
