The vote was close:
It comes after a rebellion by four House conservatives upended plans to advance the bill on Friday morning.
Lawmakers on the House Budget Committee were called back to Washington for a late-night meeting to vote on moving the legislation forward. The measure was approved by the panel in a marginally divided vote of 17 to 16, with four Republicans opting to vote “present.”
Speaker Mike Johnson of R-La. unexpectedly showed up in the committee chamber just before the voting commenced. He expressed optimism to journalists, stating, “We believe tonight will turn out positively. The outcome is imminent.”
