Nate Robinson, a former NBA player who won the slam dunk contest three different times, revealed Saturday he is currently receiving treatment for renal kidney failure.

Robinson, 38, admitted he’s been battling the illness for the past four years and said he wants to serve as the voice for all those having trouble with the illness.

“I am currently undergoing treatment for Renal Kidney Failure and have been privately dealing with it for the last four years,” Robinson wrote. “I’m sharing this now because I want to be the voice for all those who are having trouble speaking about this illness, and come together for a greater cause — our health.

“I was never a vocal leader on the court, I preferred to lead by example, but now it’s time for me to speak up and help all those affected by or dealing with Kidney Disease.”

Shams Charania of The Athletic helped spread the news via Twitter, confirming what the 11-year NBA veteran is currently facing.

Nate Robinson is grateful for care he’s received

Robinson continued his statement by expressing gratitude for those who are taking care of him.

I am grateful for the care and support I’ve received and continue to receive during this process,” Robinson wrote. “And hope through this announcement that I can help others like me.”

Robinson played for eight teams in 11 seasons, mostly remembered for his time with the New York Knicks, the franchise that drafted him in 2005 with the 21st overall pick.

He played professional basketball overseas for a couple of years before finally retiring in 2018.
