Prince Harry made headlines yet again on June 6, as he took to the stand at the High Court of the Royal Courts of Justice in London. He was there in his ongoing legal battle against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), accused of unlawful information gathering. This hearing marked the first time a British royal had given evidence in court in 130 years.

In his witness statement, Harry claimed that tabloids would regularly publish articles about him that were misleading but included factual elements suggesting that MGN had gained access to his voicemails. “Having seen me grow up from a baby and scrutinized my every move, the tabloids have known the challenges and mental health struggles that I have had to deal with throughout my childhood and adult life and for them to then play on that and use it to their own advantage, I think is, well, criminal,” Harry stated.

During the hearing, MGN’s lawyer, Andrew Green, suggested that the tabloids may have received information from palace spokespersons rather than hacking voicemails. The official trial between Harry and MGN began on May 10, but Harry was scheduled to testify on June 5. However, his attorney explained that he was unavailable since he traveled from Los Angeles after spending time with his daughter, Princess Lilibet, who turned 2.

Several other personalities, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, are also suing the publisher of Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday for illegal information gathering. Harry had previously taken legal action against Associated Newspapers on numerous occasions. In July 2022, he succeeded in his libel lawsuit against the company concerning a Feb. 20, 2022 article published by the Daily Mail about his fight for police protection in the UK.

The tabloids’ constant harassment and invasion of privacy have caused Harry a great deal of distress. The public nature of his life means that even his relationships are the subject of media speculation. Harry’s testimony shines a light on the dark side of the media and how damaging it can be to a person’s mental health.
